Customs scrutiny of the renewables sector

An Australian wholesaler has been ordered to pay over $1 million in short paid customs duty.

A Queensland solar panel wholesaler was recently ordered to pay over $1 million in customs duty and import GST as a result of an investigation by Australian Border Force (ABF).The sizeable payment was the result of an ABF investigation into the importer, who had been declaring Chinese aluminium rails used to mount solar panels as “other aluminium products” at the time of importation, which is a tariff classification that did not attract the payment of countervailing, dumping and customs dutie...
